HISTORY MAPPING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN NJ
David Munn’s bicentennial publication “Battles and Skirmishes of The American Revolution in New Jersey” was “history mapped” using Google Earth, a free geographic software. Each entry has been located (to the extent possible), and links provided to external websites so the user can access additional content explaining key events, locating monumented and marked sites, and understanding troop movement. The presentation with Historian John Allen provides an historical perspective on the ebb and flow of military events in the 1774 - 1783 time frame in both Hunterdon County and Statewide, demonstrating how to download and use the software, and how to “get the most” from the files that have been created.

Canal Historian and Author Linda Barth weaves the story of how the Delaware & Raritan Canal meandered across New Jersey, becoming one of America’s most successful towpath canals, carrying more tonnage in 1866 than even the Erie Canal. Johnson & Johnson, Roebling, and Fleischmann’s Distillery all had their start along the D&R which now provides people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and an amazing recreational facility. Following a powerpoint presentation and talk, Linda will escort you outside for an optional meander on the Canal so please wear comfortable shoes -- the 300th will supply water for the walk.

THE SPIRIT OF PLACE: IDENTIFYING FEATURES OF A CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
Is it possible to visualize how the cultural landscape evolved in each quarter century between the late 18th century and the 20th century? Using documentation of existing houses, barns and outbuildings, dendrochronology, maps, oral history, deed research and one’s own imagination, an evolving picture is created.
The talk with Historic Preservation Consultant and Designer, Carla Cielo, will conclude with a look at the 21st century with time allotted for audience discussion. Is it possible to respect the spirit of place and foster new uses? Holland Township is used as the primary example but the issues are universal.

The agricultural lifestyle of our Hunterdon County ancestors was naturally "green" and, in comparison to our standard American diet, was quite healthy. HUNTERDON MILITIAMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES AT WAR: "A PEOPLE HARASSED AND EXHAUSTED"
Join Historian and Author William "Larry" Kidder as he describes how, during the colonial period and then the American Revolution, by law, every man between the ages of 16 and 50 in New Jersey was required to enroll in his local militia company. These companies were expected to be a local, emergency defense force, but the nature of the Revolution in New Jersey radically expanded the scope of their duties. As a result, every man, and his family, faced the simultaneous requirements to keep a farm or business going while men of the family were frequently ordered to spend periods of time, often at critical points in the farming year, away from home to defend various parts of the state. The inadequate nature and enforcement of the militia laws meant that those men who responded consistently to militia call outs accepted, along with their families, a “disproportionate burden” among New Jersey citizens who supported the Revolution.
