HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONSULTANT/DESIGNER - Carla Cielo

  • THE SPIRIT OF PLACE: IDENTIFYING FEATURES OF A CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
Is it possible to visualize how the cultural landscape evolved in each quarter century between the late 18th century and the 20th century? Using documentation of existing houses, barns and outbuildings, dendrochronology, maps, oral history, deed research and one’s own imagination, an evolving picture is created. The talk with Historic Preservation Consultant and Designer, Carla Cielo, will conclude with a look at the 21st century with time allotted for audience discussion. Is it possible to respect the spirit of place and foster new uses? Holland Township is used as the primary example but the issues are universal.

  • GREEN LIVING THE HISTORIC WAY
The agricultural lifestyle of our Hunterdon County ancestors was naturally "green" and, in comparison to our standard American diet, was quite healthy. This talk will focus on the lost details of every day life in Hunterdon Co. before WWII - such as the communal frozen cow - and will look at what we can adopt from the past to make today's lifestyle more "green" and naturally healthier without "reinventing the wheel."
Carla Cielo is a Historic Preservation Consultant and a Designer working in Hunterdon County; She has documented over 250 structures throughout the region.
