Sal DeSapio was born and raised in Kingwood Township.  He attended Belmont Abbey College in Belmont North Carolina where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science.

He served as a Kingwood Township committeeman from 1999 through 2004 serving two terms as mayor. He also served as Hunterdon County treasurer and Deputy Comptroller.

He has been a revolutionary war re-enactor since the 1980s. He is a member of the Daniel Morgan's Rifle Company, lamb’s Artillery, The Brigade of the American Revolution, Bray’s Company – 2nd  Hunterdon County Militia, and participates in the annual reenactment of Washington's Crossing. He is a member of the Washington Crossing Re-enactors operations committee. He is also a Revolutionary War workshop leader for school tours at the Red Mill Museum in Clinton New Jersey.

He has served as Kingwood Township historian since the 1990s.
