- CIVIL WAR IN HUNTERDON
From 1861 to 1865 war ravaged our country not yet 100 years old. Now, 150 years later, the Civil War is being remembered in an unprecedented 5 year commemorative of re-enactments, lectures, books and documentaries. This war impacted the citizens of our nation from the biggest cities to the most rural towns, including those of rural Hunterdon County. County Historian and Author of the book "The Civil War in Hunterdon" John Kuhl shares the wealth of his research on how the war specifically affected the lives and families of our county.

- JUTLAND MASSACRE
Join Hunterdon Historian and Author John Kuhl as he discusses this fascinating
moment in history. Following John's talk, Mark Falzini, archivist of the NJ State Police Museum and author of the newly published "The Siege at Jutland" will do a presentation about the interesting Hunterdon artifacts and cases at the State Police Museum and at the State Police Archives and will autograph his book. Mark oversees the quarter of a million plus documents, artifacts, photographs, in the museum's Lindbergh Kidnapping Archive and is also co-authored "New Jersey's Lindbergh Kidnapping and Trial," with our own Jim Davidson.

Hunterdon County has long been a leader in Agricultural research, science and technology. John Kuhl is a lifelong Hunterdon County resident, who graduated from Pennsylvania State University with dual majors in Poultry Science and Naval Science in 1956. He was commissioned through the University's NROTC program as an Ensign in the Regular Navy and went on to serve as a deck officer and navigator for three years in the Weddell and Ross Seas of the Antarctic, and subsequently was selected for promotion to Lieutenant (junior grade) and Lieutenant.
John grew up in Three Bridges, New Jersey working in the family feed business and on farms in the area. His career spanned more than forty years in commercial agriculture mostly as a manager of farm stores and fertilizer plant for Agway, Inc.
He is a long-time research on Three Bridges history, Hunterdon family genealogy, and New Jersey's participation in the Civil War and is a sought-after lecturer on those topics. He is an avid collector of New Jersey Civil War arms, accoutrements, images and mementos, and a Trustee of the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association. Also, he is a founding member and former commander of the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Association. A former associate editor of Military Images magazine, he authored, with Michel Gesner, a genealogical tome on the Kuhl Family of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He is currently working wit Dr. David Martin of Hightstown on a book of biographies of New Jersey Civil War generals, commodores and admirals.
In 19999, John was appointed by the Board of Chosen Freeholders to serve on the Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission. A member of the Hunterdon County Historical Society for over 40 years, he served as Secretary for 30 years and the last seven years as Treasurer. For the Society, he also serves as a research library assistant, and a member of both the Finance and Fund Raising Committees. He is a past president and life member of the Three Bridges Volunteer Fire Company and a past member of the Quakertown (NJ) Volunteer Rescue Squad. |
