Publications and Workshops

  • Quilts Uncovered: Study of an American IconLecture first given at Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, LA, October 2003, and since then at numerous venues in NJ. Explores the history of quilts in America, with an emphasis on the evolving technology that enabled the craft and art of quilting; illustrated with 20 or more historical quilts from my own collection.
  • To Frame, or Not To Frame – What to Do with your Textiles and How to Do It.  50-page handbook for a study center given at two American Quilt Study Group Seminars, 2003 in Vancouver, WA and 2007 in Lowell, MA.
  • Vacuum Mounting, using Spray Adhesive in a Spray Booth, Decor Magazine 1997.
  • Classic Needlework, Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1976. This book’s scope was general, translating designs from varied antique sources into various modern needlework techniques.  
  • Author with Elizabeth McGrail of Creating Historic Samplers, Pyne Press, 1974.  Book-of-the-Month Club and Better Homes and Gardens Book Club selection.  Ours was the first book to translate patterns from antique cross-stitch needlework for modern materials and techniques; thoroughly researched in museum and private collections.

Activites

  • Curator of Common Threads, a 9-day exhibition of historic Hunterdon County quilts to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of Hunterdon County, April 2014
  • Curator of Textiles, Hunterdon County Historic Society, Flemington NJ since 20­­__. Document the large, early, and growing quilt collection and fundraise to insure its proper archival storage.
  • Volunteer, Burlington County Historic Association Museum, Burlington County, NJ. Help document the large, early quilt collection and research genealogical data on the quilters.
  • Founder in 2002 and still leader of the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Study Group. Hold bi-monthly meetings. Have led 27 field trips to museums and historical societies to study historical quilts.
  • Organizer of Mid-Atlantic Regional Quilt Study Daysat the Burlington County Historic Society, September of 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.
  • Co-chair of the 2011 American Quilt Study Group National Seminar, Cherry Hill NJ.

Exhibitions and Honors 

  • Quilt entitled Hedgerows exhibited in the Quilt Guild of Dallas Quilt Show; won Viewer’s Choice prize at the Courthouse Quilters Guild show the same year
  • Quilt entitled The Fortress won viewer’s choice at the Courthouse Quilters Guild show held at the Prallsville Mills in Stockton NJ.
  • Courthouse Quilters Guild Shows, 1990 – 2012, held at the Prallsville Mills in Stockton NJ on the even numbered years. Each included 3 – 6 quilts that I had made in the 2 years since the last show.

Organizations

  • Member, Courthouse Quilters Guild of Hunterdon county NJ since 1990.  Have been Membership Chairman, President, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Raffle Quilt designer and maker, and directed installation of the first three Guild shows.
  • Member. American Quilt Study Group.
  • Currently making Quilts of Valor for our wounded soldiers (#34 recently sent to Afghanistan).
  • Member. Historic Preservation Committee of East Amwell Township, Hunterdon County NJ, 1990 - 2007.
  • Chair, East Amwell Township Oral History Project, 1990 – 2007
  • East Amwell Township Historian, 1992 - 2007.
  • Founding Member, Amwell Historic Preservation Association Hunterdon county NJ.

Work Experience

  • Public School Instrumental Music Teacher, 7 years
  • Owner/manager for 31 years of Frames & Framers, a retail picture framing store in Lawrenceville, NJ. Employed 10-12 people and specialized in mounting and framing paper and textiles using reversible conservation techniques and materials. Our largest continuing client was the New York Times.

Personal

  • Married to the Artist, Allan Grow, with 2 grown sons.
