Barbara and John Hencheck, Antiquarians, Lambertville residents were married 43 years ago in St. John’s Church on Bridge Street. Barbara lived in Sergeantsville from early childhood, attended the local public schools and returned to teach as a Special Educator for 33 years. John moved to Lambertville in 1969, and with his wife, joined the Lambertville Historical Society in 1971 under President Alice Narducci. They had barely cut the check when they were “volunteered” to work on the “Baby Parade” with co-coordinators Jim Hamilton and Dom Zambello. Over their long history with the Lambertville Historical Society John has served as president for three terms and Barbara was the first curator.
Barbara and John both share a common affection for the people, history and architecture of their newfound hometown. This keen interest in Lambertville combined well with their formal and practical educations in the American material culture disciplines. Early on in their marriage they entered the world of antiques as a retail business and the perpetual researching and documenting of those objects they sold. They attended graduate school during this period and concurrently restored three period homes in Lambertville, all listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. They have continuously promoted Historic Preservation and have assisted other interested communities in their pursuit of preservation efforts. Finally, they have been a part of every project of the Lambertville Historical Society and look with pride to the ongoing excellence of the institution and its outstanding leadership.
Barbara remains active in The Kalmia Club a member of the Women’s Federation joining in 1978. She serves in a number of patriotic lineage societies at the state level: Patriotic Service Chair of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New Jersey, State Historian National Society of Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Chapter Historian DAR General Mercer Chapter, among others. She has just completed writing the history chapter for the centennial book for Stone Harbor, New Jersey. She has further contributed to the community upcoming centennial celebration in 2014 with a visual media show titled First Families, contributed a section for a DVD on the early years of the community and is a presenter of two lectures in the spring on the early years of Stone Harbor.
