A retired senior banking executive whose lifelong love for the Stars and Stripes parallels his strong interest in politics and U.S. history, J. Richard Pierce has been collecting historic American parade flags since 1991 when he acquired his first flag as a thirtieth wedding anniversary gift from his wife, Barbara.

Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, his family moved to New Jersey when he was five years old. After graduating with a degree in Political Science from Rutgers University, he served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. During his thirty-four year banking career, he specialized in bank operations and information technology.

An active member of the community, Pierce coached youth baseball, served on the local Board of Health and volunteered his time working with high school groups as a business advisor. He has been honored for his civic contributions and for his outstanding work as a corporate leader with Junior Achievement. He is a recipient of the prestigious Rutgers Loyal Sons Award for extraordinary service to his alma mater and the Abraham Lincoln Medal from the Union League Club of New York.

He served on numerous committees of the Rutgers Alumni Association and completed three terms as a trustee of Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts after serving many years as an overseer. Currently he is a trustee of Morven Museum & Garden in Princeton, a member of the Philadelphia Flag Day Association, and a volunteer with both the Hunterdon County Historical Society and The Red Mill Museum Village.

Author of the book The Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spiritâ„¢, his parade flag exhibition of the same name has been displayed throughout the country. He has appeared on cable television programs and is a noted guest lecturer and speaker for museums and historical societies, school groups, service organizations and business associations. Feature articles about his exhibits and extensive flag collection have appeared in a number of magazines and newspapers nationwide.

He enjoys woodworking with emphasis on Shaker reproduction furniture, photography and talk radio. He and Barbara live in Whitehouse Station, have two children and four grandchildren. They are avid collectors and enjoy attending antique shows and auctions.

The Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spiritâ„¢ is available at www.amazon.com and in museum gift shops.
