(R) 12 THEORIES OF WHO KIDNAPPED THE LINDBERGH BABY
On April 3, 1936 Bruno Richard Hauptmann was executed in the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton for the murder of Charles Lindbergh, Jr. Beginning in the 1960’s historians reexamined the circumstantial evident used to incriminate Hauptmann as well as new evidence that has come to light. There are many people today who think that Hauptmann was totally innocent or only slightly involved in the kidnapping. In a one hour powerpoint, Jim Davidson will present 12 other theories including that Charles Lindbergh himself staged the kidnapping; Al Capone was involved; a disbarred attorney, Paul Wendell from Trenton kidnapped the baby and even Anne Lindbergh’s family was involved. Make sure you ask Jim which one he believes!

(R) THE SPIRIT OF PLACE: IDENTIFYING FEATURES OF A CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
No matter how long you have lived in your home, neighborhood or town, you will find this talk, courtesy of the Holland Township Historical Society in conjunction with the Hunterdon Tricentennial Committee, both provocative and thought provoking.
Is it possible to visualize how the cultural landscape evolved in each quarter century between the late 18th century and the 20th century? Using documentation of existing houses, barns and outbuildings, dendrochronology, maps, oral history, deed research and one’s own imagination, an evolving picture is created.
The talk with Historic Preservation Consultant and Designer, Carla Cielo, will conclude with a look at the 21st century with time allotted for audience discussion.
Is it possible to respect the spirit of place and foster new uses?
Holland Township is used as the primary example but the issues are universal.

THE ROLE OF THE FLEMINGTON METHODIST CHURCH DURING THE
LINDBERGH TRIAL
Get in the spirit of one of the great historic events in Flemington - the Charles Lindbergh trial. Prior to attending the one-man show, "The Lone Eagle", the Flemington United Methodist Church invites you to stroll down the block and learn about the role that this church played during the trial - hosting the attorneys, press, and other key players for dinners and a break from the stress of the days' activities. John Newton of Flemington, will share and discuss a display of historic documents and other artifacts, including the actual china on which they dined! John played the role of Charles Lindbergh for 14 years in the long-running re-enactment of the trial and can answer many of your questions and share information from the original trial transcripts. The church was constructed in 1856 and has a rich history of its own. Members will be available to share some of that history as you pass through the beautiful sanctuary. This opportunity is open to the general public - even those not fortunate enough to attend the show.

(R) HUNTERDON'S HISTORIC SAMPLERS
Join artists, historians and sampler experts, Dan and Marty Campanelli, for this visually exciting Powerpoint presentation about historic Hunterdon County samplers stitched prior to 1850. Their book, A Sampling of Hunterdon County Needlework: the motifs, the makers & their stories, debuted in June, 2013 as a fundraiser for the Hunterdon County Historical Society. This book was featured in two articles in the New York Times, as well as noted as "must read" on Martha Stewart's website this past September!
Dan and Marty's presentation will detail the unique and varied styles of needlework samplers created in Hunterdon County by schoolgirls, and the couple will tell some of the stories uncovered while researching the needleworkers and their families. After their book came out, the Campanellis were asked to guest curate the first ever exhibit of New Jersey needlework which will run at Morven Museum in Princeton starting in October, 2014. As a treat, at the end of their Hunterdon Powerpoint, they will present a sneak preview of some of the samplers from around the state that will be featured in the Morven show.
Following their 45 minute presentation, there will be a question and answer period at which time attendees are encouraged to bring along any Hunterdon samplers created prior to 1850 for Show & Tell. They will also have some printed fascimiles of New Jersey needlework from their own collection on display.
Autographed copies of their book will be available for purchase at this time. All proceeds from the book, which was printed courtesy of a grant from the Astle-Alpaugh Family Foundation, benefit the Hunterdon Historical Society.

(R) HUNTERDON SETTLEMENT PATTERN SERIES LECTURE: THE HISTORY OF THE DUTCH MIGRATION
Our fifth lecture in our Migration Series: Join County and Readington Township Historian Stephanie Stevens in a talk about the migration of Dutch settlers into Hunterdon County. This lecture will take us from the Dutch coming to New Amsterdam (New York City), spreading out through New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, and beginning the settlement of Hunterdon County. Readington Township was the first new township in the new county, finally incorporated in 1798. Previous Tricentennial lectures have discussed the Proprietors, the Lenape Indians and how the land of Hunterdon was purchased and settled. This talk will bring more insight and information to those topics.
The Migration Series explores various immigrant groups that settled and influenced early Hunterdon County.
