(R) WALKING TOUR OF HISTORIC QUAKERTOWN
Noted watercolor artist Dan Campanelli and his graphic designer wife, Marty, will lead an historic walking tour of Quakertown on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Parking will be at the Franklin Township School and the tour will lead off from there and proceed through the village to Croton Road and then end at the Quakertown Friends Meetinghouse. The tour will not only contain architectural information about the structures in this historic village, but will also include insights and stories about previous residents, from the days of Quakertown’s founding in the early 1700s through the mid-1900s. The Campanellis were privileged to be able to read volumes of diaries by former Quakertown residents, Willis W. Vail and Dr. Morris Leaver, and thus learned intimate details about the community as it grew and prospered.
The Campanellis have written several books on local history, including one in 2010 with Township Historian Lora W. Jones which was part of the Images of America Series for Arcadia Publishing. Called Franklin Township, Hunterdon County, the book is filled with vintage images of the area. Their second local publication, written in 2011, was based on a manuscript by former Township Historian, J. Edward Stout (1923-2001), and is titled, The History of the Religious Society of Friends, Quakertown Monthly Meeting. Their latest accomplishment is A Sampling of Hunterdon Needlework, written as a fundraiser for the Hunterdon Historical Society in 2013.
At the completion of the Campanellis’ walking tour, the Quakertown Friends Meeting will be open for tours, as well as the historic burial ground on the property. Refreshments will be available, and there will be a sales table filled with Hunterdon 300th commemorative items as well as several of the Campanellis books In addition, Facts and Fantasies of Franklin by J. Edward Stout, will also be available. 10am
