          CIVIL WAR IN HUNTERDON
From 1861 to 1865 war ravaged our country not yet 100 years old. Now, 150 years later, the Civil War is being remembered in an unprecedented 5 year commemorative of re-enactments, lectures, books and documentaries. This war impacted the citizens of our nation from the biggest cities to the most rural towns, including those of rural Hunterdon County. County Historian and Author of the book "The Civil War in Hunterdon" John Kuhl shares the wealth of his research on how the war specifically affected the lives and families of our county.

(R)300 YEARS OF WILD FOOD FORAGING IN HUNTERDON COUNTY
Join expert forager and mycologist Robert H. Peabody as he provides an illustrative storytelling about 17th thru 19th century hunting and gathering and their importance to early Hunterdon County settlers. After Mr. Peabody's tales, join chef and mycologist Bob Hosh on a "show and tell" walk through one of Hunterdon County's wild, open spaces to forage for the foods of our foregathers.     Keep your Fast Food and your Slow Food Movement -- this is the ultimate experience in what the first settlers and Revolutionary War Heroes in Hunterdon might have eaten.

          (R) THE COUNTY SURROGATE PART II: WHYS, WHOS, HOWS AND WHERES OF WILLS
County Surrogate Susan Hoffman continues her interesting and witty stories about the Office of the Surrogate through this talk about how wills work and why you should have one.   Through her research on Hunterdon wills, Susan will illustrate, anecdotally, the importance of having a will.  This is NOT some dry legal talk but an interesting lecture on Hunerdon's history through historical wills. Refreshments follow.

            (R) HISTORY OF THE D&R CANAL
Canal Historian and Author Linda Barth weaves the story of how the Delaware & Raritan Canal  meandered across New Jersey, becoming one of America’s most successful towpath canals, carrying more tonnage in 1866 than even the Erie Canal.  Johnson & Johnson, Roebling, and Fleischmann’s Distillery all had their start along the D&R which now provides people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and an amazing recreational facility. Following a powerpoint presentation and talk, Linda will escort you outside for an optional meander on the Canal so please wear comfortable shoes -- the 300th will supply water for the walk.
