THE HAUPTMANN- LINDBERGH TRIAL:  WHEN THE CIRCUS CAME TO TOWN
On a stormy March 1, 1932 night, Charles Augustus Lindbergh, the “Little Eaglet” was stolen from his home outside of Hopewell, NJ. After paying a $50,000 reward in marked bills, the corpse of “Little Charlie” was found four miles from the Lindbergh home. Almost immediately marked kidnapped money began showing up around New York City, especially in Manhattan and the Bronx. In October of 1934, Bruno Richard Hauptman was caught passing a $10 bill from the Lindbergh ransom money. Hidden in his garage was found another $14,000. Hauptmann was extradited to Flemington, New Jersey where the “Trial of the Century” began on January 2nd, 1935.
Jim Davidson, Lindbergh enthusiast, Lindbergh memorabilia collector and frequent speaker on everything Lindbergh related, will captivate you with a power point of the six weeks of the Hauptmann Trial in Flemington. Topics such as the first weekend of the trial when 50,000 people descended on Flemington and trashed the courthouse; the movie stars and radio personalities who were there; Nellie’s Bar at the Union Hotel, etc.  Growing up in Flemington he knew many people associated with the case. Co-author of the book “New Jersey Lindbergh Kidnapping and Trial” he will attempt to talk not about weather Hauptmann was guilty or not, but all the crazy things that occurred in and out of the courtroom over the five months that Hauptmann was in the Flemington jail.
Hunterdon Central High School Little Theatre.  7 pm.  $15 at the door or in advance.  Benefits the Friends of Historic Flemington.
